Earth Box Garden

When we met for lunch at the Wellness Center a few weeks ago, the director of the center introduced us to the earth box. I had had really good experiences in recent years with my garden in Syracuse and my mother-in-law's garden in Richfield Springs, so it was nice to be reminded that I didn't have to give that up.

I heartily recommend Yuko Carey's post on the subject of earth boxes. She has laid out step-by-step how to create your own earth box garden. She helped me get started on my earth boxes and figured out where to go for seedlings and soil, even though she just arrived here. She is a master in the realm of food and gardening. AND she does graphic design. A very cool neighbor.

Tanner and Kristen also gave me pointers on how to grow excellent tomatoes. They had tomato plants that were enormous.

So here it is so far. A very enjoyable hobby.

Our empty cans of oats being put to good use. They won't last long because the salt in the air eats them up, but at least I can attempt to reuse them. These will be African daisies and zinnias.

Tomato, lettuce, spinach, moringa trees, and aloe vera (that Kristen left me).

My first attempt at growing moringa trees from the stems failed, so I'm happy to see that at least two of the seven seeds are sprouting. I replanted them in the two cans on the right (spinach is on the left).

Two beautiful cucumber plants and two tomato plants (plus a mystery plant) in the other earth box.

I grew veggies in big containers like that in DC and it worked great. I don't have a yard here, so I've got plans for major containing gardening on my terrace. Jealous of your big tin cans! :)

Nice. You have a good-lookin' terrace, so that will be fun. We brought like 100 #10 cans with us, so we've got plenty.

Very pretty! I'm going to try that here. Unfortunately, my balcony is east-facing, but I think I could do cukes.

My green thumbed Jamie! Talk about a great idea! Good for you!! How about growing a coconut tree to take with you in a year?
We absolutely love all of Max's theatrical performances. We watch them over and over. Our favorite is his giggle before he does his Darth Vader. Andrew use to call water "money" when he was Max's age. Once I left him with Grandma and Grandpa Zvirzdin and forgot to worn them about the money/water mix-up. Andrew was crying and they were trying to console him with dollars and quarters to no avail. At least Max has the right words with the right items! Love you all. XXXOOO
